UK: Road signs hacked

img road sign small On Thursday last week thousands of commuters driving to work in Crawley, West Sussex got a special greeting in the morning.

Digital roadside signs that usually inform about parking availability, instead told visitors to “F*** off”. The message appeared on all similar signs around Crawley at about 6.45am and the Council declared that hackers gained remote access to their computers.

UK newspaper “The Daily Telegraph” is associating the act on their web site with the US-based online community TOTSE.

…Our IT staff had the message removed by 9.05am. I think people realise that this was not the work of the council, but we apologise for any offence. Some people found it rather amusing… a council spokesperson said.

PayPal: HP adds PayPal as payment option

img Paypal logo small You can tell that a new solution has become mainstream when key market players announce publicly that they will use it.

Yesterday worldwide number 1 computer manufacturer Hewlett-Packard has announced that it now is offering PayPal as a new payment option in their online stores. With the agreement, the HP Home & Home Office Store products and supplies will now be accessible to PayPal’s more than 122 million accounts.

Besides other options - HP also accepts credit card payments – with the new PayPal option customers can now pay for items using their credit cards, bank accounts and stored balances without having to share their financial information while shopping. With many small or mid-size web services using PayPal as their preferred way to receive payments - for example with money accrued through Google’s Adsense advertizing network - these now got another way to spend their balances with PayPal without transferring them back to their bank accounts. We hope that HP will extend this offer to other products as well.

PayPal that was acquired in 2002 by EBay for USD 1.5 billions is active in 103 countries around the world. With its service individual or businesses with an email address can send and receive payments online using a local bank account or transfer money to their PayPal account via credit card or otherwise.

Top 10 time waster games

img videos When you’re done with MS Windows included games or other freebies or these “nasty” admins at work didn’t install them on your computer here are some suggestions of online games.

We did only include games you can play with little effort - for example by just using the mouse -and that run as Flash files. No arcade games are included.

We’ve tried all of them out personally (guess why we only put up 3 posts yesterday) and these are the best we found in the different categories that exist. And we do know that there are many other great ones out there (comment box is below):

Internet: Make the web a safer place and provide firewall data

img ISC 01 With more and more people using ADSL broadband and always on Internet connections, we believe it might be time for a little reminder. Support the SANS Internet Storm Center and provide firewall logs to the DShield database.

The Internet Storm Center (ISC) is an initiative of the SANS Institute, one of the most reputable computer security institutions. The data collection engine behind the ISC is provided by the associated non profit organization DShield a distributed Intrusion Detection System. The database currently collects more then 500 million incidents per month about cracker activity from all over the world though simple packet filter logs that can be created by any firewall. More complex patterns as used by application level firewalls are unfortunately still not supported.

You can help this initiative by submitting logs from your firewall to the DShield database. A whole set of ready to go client applications for many firewalls can be downloaded from their site.

The image below shows the Flash application from the ISC web site that displays movies of traffic submitted within the last 5 minutes to DShield. The colors indicate the packet type.

You’re not using a firewall. Well good luck then…

Environment: Inc. Magazine’s Top 50 green entrepreneurs

img green 50 Entrepreneur’s magazine Inc is introducing the Green 50 of entrepreneurial companies that embrace the concept of green business.

Inc. Magazine believes that the current green awakening is driven as much by markets as morality:

…High oil prices, global warming, the sense that chemicals cause real harm and the earth’s resources are indeed finite–these are not so much charitable causes to embrace as they are problems that entrepreneurs can solve. Wall Street and Silicon Valley certainly understand this: Venture capital firms invested $958 million in renewable energy companies in the first half of 2006 alone…

The range of companies includes high-tech firms making big bets on the future of energy to companies that are trying to find different ways to do business. Each of the 50 organizations selected is introduces with a profile. Companies are categorized into eight groups from industrialist to recyclers.

The report is published in the November edition of the magazine and is available online.

Non-Profit: WWF introduces gift catalog

img wwf catalog With his first ever holiday gift catalog the conservation organization WWF has added another possibility to purchase goods that pay back.

The printed catalog that the WWF sends on request to potential donors showcases 38 species of animals available for symbolic adoption. Additionally it features the WWF’s unique Extraordinary Gifts Program that includes gifts ranging from $1,000 to $2.5 million with funds going directly to the project chosen.

The most expensive gift at USD 2.5 million, potentially made over several years, would permanently endow the salaries of scientists, park managers and anti-poaching officers working on the ground in key tiger protection areas around the world. Animal adoptions range from USD 25 to USD 250 in price.

The gift catalog is part of the WWF’s Online Giving Center. Other non-profit organizations have also turned to online fund raising and for example Oxfam America offers online gifts including to buy animals for villagers in need around the world.

The WWF works in more then 100 countries. With more then 5 million members it is the world’s largest privately financed conservation organization. Potential donors can also express their interest and get information online for all of the gifts included in the catalog at the WWF Online Giving Center.
