Data-Visualization: The Perfect Nap

link to article
The “Boston Globe” has published a great info graphic on a topic many people working in offices are at least dreaming about most of the afternoons - why, when and how to best take a nap.

And contrary to common opinion taking a short nap during early afternoon hours is not a sign of laziness, weakness or senility, it will bring back the energy, sharpens your mind and gets you back into the mood to survive long working hours…

Nazi-Germany Anthem used at European Football championship

link to article
One event currently has, during evenings, swept almost half of Europe’s population off the streets (the other half is most likely watching it in so called public viewing zones) - the European Football championship.

Now this Monday, Swiss TV who together with Austrian TV for the two hosting nations Austria and Switzerland is transmitting the TV footage from the games, had a bit of a problem staying up to date with changes in neighboring Germany during the last 60 years. To be more precise it turned back time to the 1940s of Nazi Germany.

When the two teams at the beginning of the match between Germany and Austria were singing their National Anthems, Swiss TV used the verse for the German Anthem in its sub titles that was sung until the fall of the Third Reich.

The TV station mentioned in their apology, that it all happened by mistake. Officially the incident was blamed on two junior members of the TV team that have “copied the wrong text from the Internet“. And while these sub titles…

Weekend activity: Create some paper toys

link to article
If its raining or its too cold (or too hot) or whichever other reason you have not to go outside here are some unusual paper toys that surely will impress your friends (or kids).

Many of these toys can be made with just a few sheets of paper, scissors and some tape, others like for example the the Paper Rose or Flower paper (see link section below) are more elaborate but should still be mastered by everyone.

The toys we chosen for this article are more like the ones you would create when you sit together with a group of friends or want to show your kids something old Daddy or Mom can do. There are of course many others that use templates to be printed on photo paper, cut with an art knife and then glued together. We provide links for these too…

Quote of the day: Civic courage

link to article
A decline in courage may be the most striking feature that an outside observer notices in the West today.

The Western world has lost its civic courage, both as a whole and separately, in each country, in each government, in each political party, and, of course, in the United Nations.

Such a decline in courage is particularly noticeable among the ruling and intellectual elites, causing an impression of a loss of courage by the entire society.

Alexander Solzhenitsyn, famous Russian dissident writer, Nobel prize and Templeton Prize winner, Harvard University address (1979)

Fun: The 10 Best (Vintage) Scooter Clips Online

link to article
We love scooters and more and more people leave their petrol guzzling four wheels at home and again take a scooter, for the drive to the office, around town - or best - just to go for a ride.

With so many new (electrical / hybrid) and more ecologically friendly four stroke scooters coming to the market lets take a look back how it all began. The beautiful Lambrettas from Innocenti or the old Vespas from Piaggio that after the second World War were the only mean of transport available to many Europeans.

By now they have reached cult status, modded or plain original versions parked somewhere most of the times get you into a chat with some people admiring them. You get a happy smile on people’s faces reminding them of great times and a new start in the life of many.

Today you often find scooters prominently placed in advertising for products that have nothing to do with scootering. But for the real thing there are a few clips and videos that bring back the time and let you feel the wind in your hair. Those clips and videos we tried to find and the best ones we have listed below…

Photography: Branson DeCou Archive

link to article
Photographer Branson DeCou traveled the world for thirty years before his death in 1941. Since 1971, when the University of California - Santa Cruz received his huge slide collection it has been the home of the archive of photographer Branson DeCou.

Branson DeCou produced mainly lantern slides imprinted on glass twice as big as 35-mm slides, that made them delicate to handle and almost impossible for general or public use.

Thanks to a grant from the Gladys Krieble Delmas Foundation the UCSC could buy state-of-the-art scanning equipment and process 1,475 of the 10,000 DeCou slides in their collection.

The 1,475 slides processed and made available online are photographs that Branson DeCou took in Italy during several trips in the 1920s and early 1930s. They show scenes of daily life as well as artwork and destinations…
