Rants’n Raves: Euro 2008 Football (soccer) championship
Been sitting around this afternoon watching the semifinals of the Euro 2008 football championship via the Internet (there is no post on this site how to use a proxy to watch German TV from the US - go look somewhere else). Have to admit that I normally never watch football or golf or TV in general since they’ve replaced most of the interesting stuff with game shows, but today I made an exception.
So I’m sitting here nibbling on Lieber’s Kosher Winkies (that’s what my Deli had for sweets - not bad anyway, but full of artificial flavors) and watching parts of that game - the Germans win and there’s that big huha going on, everybody’s celebrating - besides the Turks of course - and dancing people anywhere as if they would have contributed to the result.
Then what would you expect German TV to do - interview some players, the coach, your grand uncle who knows everything about soccer - NO WAY!
They go straight ahead for some political schmoozing and…

Nazi-Germany Anthem used at European Football championship
One event currently has, during evenings, swept almost half of Europe’s population off the streets (the other half is most likely watching it in so called public viewing zones) - the European Football championship.
Now this Monday, Swiss TV who together with Austrian TV for the two hosting nations Austria and Switzerland is transmitting the TV footage from the games, had a bit of a problem staying up to date with changes in neighboring Germany during the last 60 years. To be more precise it turned back time to the 1940s of Nazi Germany.
When the two teams at the beginning of the match between Germany and Austria were singing their National Anthems, Swiss TV used the verse for the German Anthem in its sub titles that was sung until the fall of the Third Reich.
The TV station mentioned in their apology, that it all happened by mistake. Officially the incident was blamed on two junior members of the TV team that have “copied the wrong text from the Internet“. And while these sub titles…

Images: A first impression from the Bol d’Or - Geneva
Every year in June the SNG in Geneva, that is also home to the current Americas Cup winner Alinghi, together with other sponsors, arranges Europe’s biggest lake regatta - the Bol d’Or. This year’s Bol d’Or Mirabaud was presented by Girard-Perregaux and attracted almost 600 boats from all over Europe.
What’s so great about this event - besides its sheer size - is that hobby sailors can compete with the top elite of the world.
Now in its 70th year, this year’s Bol d’Or was again…

Europe: Skiing season starts with record snow
After a few seasons with very little snow this skiing season in Europe is starting with new records of snow heights.
The last days of massive snow falls throughout Europe - it was even snowing on some Spanish islands normally considered by many as a warm winter refuge - have brought amounts of snow to Austrian, German, Swiss and French resorts some of them have not seen for the whole season the last years and never been seen in November before.
While the US and Canada the last years where lucky with record snow heights, in Europe many resorts experienced “droughts” to the extend that in Switzerland the last two winters fire warnings had to be issues to prevent forest fires.
Lets hope this year will be different and it looks like it might be.
And people are desperate to go…

Europe: Get your A-Levels for surfing
Why learn Maths or Physics when surfing the waves does the job?
In France surfing is now officially part of the curriculum for the Baccalaureat (A-Levels / high school diploma). This week the first 43 contestants took their practical and oral tests in south-west France near Bordeaux.
“…with sun shine, a breeze from the east and more than one meter high waves on the Atlantic the weather conditions were especially good…” said…

Society: Israel’s general strike and the soccer championship
You might have seen in the news that this morning about 400,000 Israeli workers stopped working and started a general strike in the public sector. Within this strike all public service except Post offices, banks, telephones, the health sector and the defense sector are basically closed until further notice (sorry almost forgot, the stock exchange will stay open as well which surprisingly seems to be considered as an essential service in that country - hmmm…). Anyway the strike was launched after thousands of municipal workers have not been paid for months and as one of the results of the strike there will be no public transport including international flights to and from the country. All flights are grounded - no wait - all but one…

Sports: Underwater Ice Hockey World Championship
The first ever World Cup in the new extreme sport of underwater ice hockey has been staged at Weissensee in Southern Austria. Eight teams from Austria, the Czech Republic, Finland, Germany, the Netherlands, Poland, Slovakia and Slovenia were competing for the world cup. The game is played with teams of two men in a rink 6 meters wide and 8 meters long, under 30 centimeters of ice. Playing without oxygen tanks, the players are chasing a Styrofoam puck with a hockey stick into goals fastened to the ice cover upside down. They have to surface for air approximately every 30 seconds through holes…
