Social Networks: Friendface
Just a quick reminder to all of you that are spending too much time on so-called social networks over the holiday weekend.
The short clip below is from Channel 4’s cult series “The IT Crowd” that unfortunately was discontinued last year…

Advertising: Whopper Sacrifice
A great viral advertising idea. For every 10 (virtual) friends you defriend at Facebook you get a free Whopper from Burger King (U.S. Residents only).
Finally someone is putting a price tag to virtual friendship (1/10 of a burger - xxx calories, xxx USD) and a way to bring all these SEO spammers to a better use. So far more than 12,000 friends have been un-friended.
Interestingly they have chosen Facebook and not, for example, MySpace. Maybe because they want to sell some Burgers as well.

Data Visualization: Virtual Worlds
Marketing research company K Zero has published some interesting diagrams on virtual worlds. The first visualizes the virtual worlds by registered accounts and their development since 2003. It also includes some virtual worlds currently in development.
The second diagram shows the involvement of companies and their brands within these virtual worlds.
While the diagrams are very informative we are missing…

Micro-Blogging: Tumblr documentary
If you’re looking for a different point of view on micro-blogging - here’s a “documentary” on Tumblr. Users are talking about follower, real life meetings, why they are using etc.
Mostly sarcastic but also asking the the right question: Why do you spend so much time on tools like that - or what is it you’re missing from your life…

Data-Visualization: Visualizing Corporate America
Based on data from the SEC for 60,000 directors or high-level employees, Toby Segaran created this graphical network of major US companies that share board members or CEOs. A bit like a social network graph for companies.
Besides the relationship between the companies the diagram also visualizes…

From our does it blend department : Is Digg.com going down tonight?
We were impressed how well their web site scaled to the ever increasing user numbers. And they’ve been adding features over features. But tonight it seems for the first time the site is going down on its knees.
While the servers still reply immediately to any ping or traceroute packets, the wait for pages has now…

Data visualization: Social networks around the world
With new data on Facebook making the headlines yesterday telling us that their user numbers are leveling out in the US and the UK, we remembered that we recently have seen a great info-graphic showing the use of social networks with the most popular providers per country around the world in the French Newspaper “Le Monde”
The data used in the graphic is from August 2007 but it’s interesting to see the popularity of providers in different countries. There are a few white spots on the map, some…

Music: Led Zeppelin Reunion
How to tell if an event was a great and global success. Well the Led Zeppelin concert in London this Monday definitely put the bar up quite a bit for others.
If 2,000,000 want to come and you have to distribute the tickets through a lottery to the lucky 20,000 that’s definitely an indication. If news stations around the world are reporting on the event at prime time even a better one. Not to mention the hundreds of web blogs, news paper and magazine sites.
And if on web sites from YouTube to MySpace hundreds of video clips of the event appear within 24 hours - we stopped counting on YouTube at 250 - you have definitely won the crowds over…
