RIP – Etta James

image Etta James Today soul, blues and R&B legend Etta James died in California – may her soul be blessed. Her life was a journey rough and long and we hope she found peace at last. She was a wonderful artist and a great human being.
Rest in paradise, dear sister Etta…

At last my love has come along
My lonely days are over
And life is like a song
At last the skies above are blue
And my heart was wrapped up in clover
The night I looked at you
I found a dream that I can speak to
A dream that I could call my own
I found a thrill to press my cheek to
A thrill that I have never known
You smiled, and then the spell was cast
And here we are in heaven
For you are mine at last

and one of the greatest songs we know – I’d rather go blind

Something told me it was over
When I saw you and her talking
Something deep down in my soul said “Cry Girl”
When I saw you and that girl walking out

I would rather, I would rather go blind boy
Than to see you walk away from me child
So you see, I love you so much
That I don’t want to watch you leave me baby
Most of all I just don’t, I just don’t want to be free, no

I was just, I was just, I was just sitting here thinking
Of your kisses and your warm embrace, yeah
When the reflection in the glass that I held to my lips now baby
Revealed the tears that was on my face

Yeah, and baby, baby I would rather be blind boy than to see you walk away,
See you walk away from me, yeah
Baby, baby, baby I’d rather be blind now

We’ve first listened to Ayo, the Nigerian-Roma Soul, Reggae and Acoustic Soul singer a while ago at the Paleo festival. What a performance and what a person. She definitely has seen rough times in her life, but when I see her smile it’s the smile of a survivor.

Carry on and here are three songs from this outstanding person.
