RIP: James Brown

One of the greatest 20th century musicians is gone. James Brown, the “Godfather of Soul” died last night at Emory Crawford Long Hospital in Atlanta after being admitted there on Saturday for treatment of severe pneumonia, his manager, Frank Copsidas, said.

With his frenetic singing style and rhythms the “hardest working man in show business” made funk popular to a broad audience and influenced a whole new generation of black music.

His live was like a roller coster ride – full of ups and downs – being born in extreme poverty and making it to one of the biggest record-sellers in rhythm and blues. Every record he made during 1960-77 reached the top 100. During the 1980s and 90s he was arrested several times – charged with drug and weapons possession – and had to spend time in jail.

He had more than 119 singles in the charts, recorded over 50 albums, was included in the Rock ‘n’ Roll Hall of Fame and won several Grammies including a lifetime achievement award in 1992.

Global fanboy conferences are currently taking place to discuss the setting up of a statue of James Brown in Atlanta or other parts of Georgia.
